My Dearest Friend,

...should I draw you the picture of my heart it would be what I hope you would still love although it contained nothing new. The early possession you obtained there, and the absolute power you have obtained over it, leaves not the smallest space unoccupied.
I look back to the early days of our acquaintance and friendship as to the days of love and innocence, and, with an indescribable pleasure, I have seen near a score of years roll over our heads with an affection heightened and improved by time. The dreary years of absence have not in the smallest degree erased from my mind the image of the dear untitled man to whom I gave my heart.

Love letter written by Napoleon Bonarparte to Josephine in December 1795, less than a year before their wedding:

I wake filled with thoughts of you. Your portrait and the intoxicating evening which we spent yesterday have left my senses in turmoil. Sweet, incomparable Josephine, what a strange effect you have on my heart.
Are you angry? Do I see you looking sad? Are you worried? My soul aches with sorrow and there can be no rest you my love.But is there still in store for me when, yielding to the profound feelings which overwhelm me, I draw from your lips a kiss, from your heart, a love, which consumes me with fire?
Ah, it was last night that I fully realized how your portrait gives a false image of you. You are leaving at noon. I shall see you in three hours.
Until then, mio dolce amor, a thousand kisses from me. But give me none of yours in return, for they set my blood on fire.
